Types of Geek Squad Jobs & Requirements
Computer Agents are the employees that focus on providing customer service and repairing computers. The position requires “strong technical expertise,” which boils down to familiarity with DOS, Windows, and Mac software, a deep understanding of correcting and troubleshooting issues on these systems as well as internet and network connections, good research skills, and experience in installing and updating software. In addition, proof of Apple certifications and Linux experience is preferred.
Computer Agent managers lead other staff members, work with finances, oversee and assist in repairs and other services, and work with upper management to run their store efficiently and profitably. To be a manager, a high school diploma is required, along with at least four years of experience in computer repair and at least a year’s worth of prior management experience. Preferred candidates have an A+ Computer Certification or high and an Associate or Bachelor’s degree in PC repair.
Geek Squad Installers get to venture out into the world, working at customer’s homes or businesses. The position is broken into three levels, and it also includes specialized fields. The most basic position, Installer I, involves assisting with two-person installations and deliveries, completing paperwork, and providing great customer service to clientelle. A high school diploma is a must for this position, as well as one year worth of similar experience, a valid driver’s license and a clean driving record, and State required certifications. CEDIA, ICIA, and NICET certifications are also preferred, along with a low-voltage license.
The next level, a Geek Squad Installer II, leads installations and supervises Installer I team members. Experience in an Installer I position, as well as a 2-year technical Associate degree are required to secure this position.
Those who find themselves in Installer III positions have demonstrated excellence in the two former Installer levels. They meet all the criteria for the lower positions and also must be able to give and write cost estimates and supervise Installer I and II team members. Finally, candidates should have a 2 or four-year technical degree.
Finally, Geek Squad Car Autotechs work to install and troubleshoot the latest in technology for your vehicle. Autotech Trainees require nothing more than a passion for technology, motivation, and great work ethic. Trainees go through an 8-week program during which they will learn what it takes to be a Best Buy Autotech. Certified Best Buy Autotechs complete installations, offer customer service, and also deal with sales and loss prevention. To become an Autotech, candidates must simply secure a passing score on the certification test.
Geek Squad Pay
Each position comes with a different salary. Higher ranking positions earn more money. Lower level Computer Agents make around $10 an hour, while Installers make about $16. Managers and the highest ranking positions can make upward of $25 an hour. Salaries often vary per employee and are based off of experience, years with the company, and position level.
